Waarom verhaart mijn hond of kat zoveel? (en wat helpt echt)

Why is my dog or cat shedding so much? (and what really helps)

Hair everywhere. On your sofa, your clothes... and yes, even in places you really don't expect it 😅

If you feel your dog or cat is suddenly shedding excessively, you're certainly not alone.
But in most cases, there's actually nothing wrong.

Shedding is simply normal

The coats of dogs and cats work in phases. Always.

  • anagen phase (growth)
  • catagen phase (transition)
  • telogen phase (rest and shedding)

In that last phase, hairs come loose.
That's exactly what you see lying around the house.

Why it sometimes seems "suddenly" worse

Many people say:
"He seems to be shedding so much more all of a sudden."

But usually, this is what's happening:

  • you are in the middle of a shedding period
  • loose fur was not fully removed before
  • or you are using a tool that is not correctly calibrated

Then it seems as if everything is coming loose at once.

When do they shed the most?

The biggest peaks are usually seen:

  • in spring
  • in autumn

But indoors, an animal can also shed lightly all year round.
Heating and light play a bigger role in that than you might think.

What often goes wrong

This is where I see it go wrong most often:

  • brushing too hard
  • staying in the same spot for too long
  • thinking you "need to do more" to solve it

But honestly?
You usually just make it worse.

What does help

Good coat care is actually quite simple.

Work calmly. Without pressure. And in short movements.

Don't keep going endlessly in the same spot, and just stop on time.
When the loose hairs are gone, it's done.

Doing more is not better.

Not every brush does the same thing

That's something often underestimated.

For daily maintenance, a curved slicker brush works very well.
It helps to keep the coat airy and to loosen small tangles.

During shedding, it's best to use a tool specifically designed for loose hair.
For example, a flexible comb that only removes what is actually loose.

Don't see anything in the comb?
Then there's simply nothing loose at that moment. That's perfectly normal.

Washing helps more than you think

What many people forget:
during washing, a lot of loose hairs often come out.

With a good shampoo and possibly a conditioner, you loosen and soften the coat, making everything much smoother afterwards.

In summary

Shedding is part of it.
It happens in phases.
And brushing harder is rarely the solution.

The right approach is gentle, thoughtful, and tailored to the coat.

Finally

A beautiful coat is not about removing as much hair as possible.
It's about understanding what the coat needs at that moment.

That's the difference between just brushing...
and truly caring.
