Fleas, knots and difficult coats

Does your dog have matted fur or fleas? Read how Bricks&Broks grooming salon handles this and why some coats require more time or a customized treatment.

Coat problems in dogs and cats

The condition of the coat greatly influences the duration and type of treatment at the grooming salon.

When a coat is well-maintained, a grooming session can proceed calmly and efficiently.

However, with a severely matted coat, heavy undercoat, or fleas, treatment may require more time and extra work.

In these cases, a customized treatment may be necessary.

Matting in the coat

Matting occurs when loose hairs remain in the coat and clump together.

This is common in:

• dogs with curly coats

• doodles and poodles

• long-haired dogs

• coats that are rarely brushed

Mats can sit very tightly against the skin and sometimes even cause pain to the animal.

When a coat is too severely matted, it is often more animal-friendly and safer to clip the coat shorter.

The Smoothie Model

When a coat is too severely matted to be safely detangled, we sometimes opt for the Smoothie Model.

This means the coat is clipped short so that:

• the skin can breathe again

• painful mats disappear

• the coat can grow back healthily

The Smoothie Model typically has a length of about 3 to 6 mm.

The Teddy Model usually starts from about 10 mm coat length.

Detangling or restoring a coat

In some cases, a coat can still be gently detangled.

This depends on:

• how tight the mats are

• how large the area is

• how comfortable the animal remains during treatment

When detangling becomes too painful or stressful for the animal, we always choose the most animal-friendly solution.

Fleas in the grooming salon

If fleas are detected during the treatment, we temporarily stop the grooming session.

This is done to:

• avoid contamination of other animals

• protect the hygiene of the salon

In this case, we charge a fee of €10 for the salon's treatment, and a new appointment is scheduled after the animal has been treated at home.

The importance of regular maintenance

A well-maintained coat makes a big difference to the animal's comfort.

Regular brushing and timely visits to the grooming salon help to:

• prevent matting

• avoid skin problems

• make the grooming session more pleasant

We are happy to advise you on how best to maintain your dog's or cat's coat at home.
